Closing the Execution Chasm: How Human and Artificial Intelligence Can Restore Organizational Coherence

When business initiatives stall, executive teams often assume their underlying strategy needs work. Yet in many organizations, the real trouble lies much closer to daily operations—hidden in the handoffs between departments, the delays between decisions, and the distance between leadership’s intentions and employees’ lived reality.

Systems strategist and organizational development consultant Zen Benefiel suggests that companies routinely misdiagnose this breakdown, confusing operational disconnection with faulty planning.

“In every organization, there’s a gap between what leadership decides and what actually gets done,” Benefiel notes. “We call it the execution chasm. Follow these friction points, and you’ll find where the margin is leaking.”

By paying attention to these seemingly minor delays, leaders can identify systemic weaknesses before they become expensive failures. When projects run late, decisions remain unresolved, or assignments require repeated revisions, the wasted payroll, opportunity, and energy remain concealed within normal operating expenses.

“The cost isn’t clearly identified on a balance sheet,” Benefiel says. “It’s buried in slow cycles, duplicated effort, avoidable meetings, and rework.”

Addressing friction early also protects employees from the exhaustion of navigating recurring administrative loops. What appears to be a productivity problem may actually be a coherence problem affecting the entire enterprise.

“Ask whether your people share an understanding of the desired result,” Benefiel says. “Misalignment multiplies cost at every step. Restore clarity first, and the bottleneck may dissolve without adding another layer of complexity.”

Taking time to establish that shared understanding can prevent months of corrective meetings, duplicated effort, and frustrated collaboration.

Creating sustainable operational speed requires systems that support how people actually collaborate—not systems that force them into artificial hierarchies or idealized workflows.

Leadership teams frequently design protocols that appear orderly on paper but create practical obstacles during daily execution. When formal procedures obstruct progress, employees develop informal workarounds to get their jobs done. Although these adaptations may solve immediate problems, they also hide bottlenecks from executive view and create new operational blind spots.

“Third, close the execution chasm with systems that reflect how people really work,” Benefiel states. “Remember, a living enterprise consists of humans, not merely machines or roles on an organizational chart. The greatest margin recovery comes from bridging the gap between decision and delivery.”

Simplifying that path allows employees to spend more time creating value and less time navigating bureaucratic hurdles.

“Build operational systems around real workflows, not just org charts,” Benefiel suggests. “When responsibilities, decisions, and handoffs become visible, accountability rises and energy stops scattering across unnecessary oversight.”

As organizations invest heavily in automation and artificial intelligence, executive success still depends on the quality and clarity of human interaction. Technology alone cannot compensate for broken communication, conflicting assumptions, or vague operational objectives. When leaders remove internal friction and align daily activity with shared goals, their organizations gain the focus required to execute consistently.

“When the path from idea to execution is clear, accountability rises, energy concentrates, and hidden costs return as recovered margin,” Benefiel observes. “Friction reveals the bottleneck, alignment removes it, and closing the execution chasm protects margin for the long term.
